Can Borussia Dortmund count on often-injured captain Marco Reus?

The last two seasons for Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus have felt like Deja vu. After getting off to a hot start propelling the Yellow and Black into a title fight, Reus experienced injuries curtailing his participation with the team.

In 2018-19, Reus played 27 times scoring 17 goals and tallying 11 assists. But injuries prevented him from doing more as Borussia Dortmund missed out on the title to Bayern Munich.

Last season, Reus appeared in 19 Bundesliga games before another injury took him out of the line-up. Reus missed Borussia Dortmund’s final 14 games in the Bundesliga.

Now fit and ready to start the new campaign, there is hope that Reus can stay injury-free and lead Borussia Dortmund to a Bundesliga title. Borussia Dortmund kick off the Bundesliga campaign against Borussia Monchengladbach in a massive opening day fixture. Fans that love betting on soccer can get the latest odds and wager on the team they believe will win when the Borussia clubs meet on opening day.

Marco Reus’s importance to BVB

There is certainly an argument that Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho’s rise at Signal Iduna Park make Reus and afterthought. While both Haaland and Sancho have been brilliant, neither is likely to be at Borussia Dortmund long-term. Sancho was expected to leave this season with Manchester United tipped to sign him. The transfer now looks unlikely to happen until next summer.

Any exit of Haaland or Sancho magnifies the importance of Reus. He isn’t just a goalscorer and creative hub in the attack. Reus is Borussia Dortmund’s captain and a vital experienced player in a side of young men coming through at the club.

In four of Reus’s six season for Borussia Dortmund, he has exceeded his expected goals figures. The last three season all saw Reus top the expected figures. Reus has scored 61 career Bundesliga goals for BVB on a career expected goals tally of 59.78.

Injuries are a problem

Injuries have ravaged Reus and cost him a lot of game time since joining Borussia Dortmund. Reus has never played a full 34-game Bundesliga season. In fact, in four of his six seasons with the club, Reus has played 20 or fewer games. The 2017-18 season saw Reus play his lowest number of games with just 11.

Reus’s injury record at Borussia Dortmund is long. In 2019-20 alone, he missed 20 games with various injuries and fitness issues. He missed six games the season prior. Lucien Favre cannot count on Reus to be fit from week to week.

Combining the German with Haaland and Sancho could get Borussia Dortmund close to the title this season. Hanging onto Sancho may be the best move the club end up making as the Englishman can pick up the slack once more if Reus is hurt.

According to reports in Dortmund, Reus is ready for Borussia Dortmund’s opener. Had the season started on time in August, he would have most likely missed games. However, the postponement of the campaign means Reus is fit.

Reus played in BVB’s preseason 2-1 win against Sparta Rotterdam to return to the team. He scored the team’s opener. Now, Favre will hope one of his most dynamic players can play a majority of the campaign and fight Bayern Munich for the championship.
