10 Football Records Most Likely to Fall This Season

Football is a sport filled with records, big and small. Some records show individual brilliance and team dominance, while others show complete failure to leave a mark on the football season.

2025-26 is shaping up to be a season of broken records across both club and international football.

Punters chasing the next broken record can do so by betting on outright positions at some of the best sportsbooks on the market, including those reviewed by Nees Stoiximatikes Etairies and other review aggregators.

It is also worth noting that individual records are more likely to be bested, while team records can be trickier and often fall short of their ultimate goal.

Most Goals Scored by a Player in a Premier League Season

The current Premier League goalscoring record for a single season belongs to Erling Haaland, who scored 36 goals during the 2022-23 campaign.

This season, having already scored 14 goals in 11 matches, he could be on track to best his own record and potentially score 40 or more goals by the end of the 2025-26 campaign for Manchester City.

Haaland could also potentially beat Mohamed Salah’s goal involvement record, which stands at 47 goals and assists in the 2024-25 season.

Most Goals Scored by a Player in a Single Bundesliga Season

Robert Lewandowski holds the record for the most goals scored in a Bundesliga season, having netted 41 for Bayern over the 2020-21 season.

However, Harry Kane, also playing for Bayern Munich, has already scored 13 in 10 league games this season. If Bayern continue to dominate, and Kane stays fit, he could beat Lewandowski’s record by 1 or 2 goals by the end of the 2025-26 season.

The Best Premier League Finish By a Newly-Promoted Team

Newly-promoted teams in the Premier League often punch above their weight with surprising wins and overall resilience. However, no team promoted to the Premier League has been as successful as Ipswich Town during the 2000-01 season, when they finished 5th with a whopping 66 points.

The 2025-26 season has shown Sunderland to be the dark horse, with 19 points from their first 11 fixtures. If Sunderland were to emulate the same points-per-game as Ipswich, they would end the season with 66 points too, which means just a single draw more than Ipswich could break the record.

Biggest Win Recorded by a Relegated Team

While not a record usually tracked by football data aggregators and journalists, the 2025-26 Eredivisie season in the Netherlands is showing an interesting unfolding phenomenon. Heracles Almelo, the team notorious for using artificial turf on their home stadium, has emerged as one of the favourites to be relegated at the end of the season.

The team’s terrible defensive record saw Heracles sitting at the bottom of the table with only 3 points, 7 goals scored, and 30 conceded. However, a home game against fellow relegation strugglers PEC Zwolle saw Heracles bulldoze to an astounding 8-2 win over their direct competitors.

If Heracles is eventually relegated, the 8-2 win against Zwolle would be a modern goalscoring record for a relegated side.

Most Goals Scored by Bayern Munich in a Bundesliga Season

Bayern’s top 2 goalscoring seasons saw the team score 101 and 100 goals in the Bundesliga, respectively. Having already scored 35 in 10 games this season, the team could beat its own record by the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Assuming the same goals-per-game ratio of 3.5 as constant, the team would end the season with 119 goals. However, reality is much less predictable, even for teams like Bayern Munich.

Highest Number of Debutants at the FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already a special one due to format changes and expansion to 48 teams. This change also means that the likelihood that the 2026 rendition of the tournament will have the most debutants is extremely high.

Teams like Jordan, Uzbekistan, and Cape Verde have already qualified. The fact that hosts Canada, the USA, and Mexico have automatically qualified means that the CONCACAF qualifier gives underdogs unforeseen opportunities. Curacao and Suriname are among the two possible debutants, while Gabon could add to the list if the team beats the African play-offs to qualify for the WC.

Lowest Points Tally in a Premier League Season

The worst Premier League team in terms of final points tally is Derby County, with an abysmal 11 points in 38 games by the end of the 2007-08 season.

However, Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 2025-26 season has demonstrated an inability to pick up points even against direct competitors. The team has only 2 points in 11 games, and if they do not win a few matches, they could best the infamous 11-point record set by Derby County.

The Celtic-Rangers 40-year Hegemony in Scotland

The Scottish top flight has been a story of two teams dominating the league for 40 consecutive years, with Celtic and Rangers lifting 22 and 18 titles, respectively.

The last team other than Rangers and Celtic to have won the Scottish league was Aberdeen in the 1984-85 season, led by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 2025-26 season tells a different story, with Heart of Midlothian, or Hearts, leading the league with 7 points over Celtic after 12 matches. However, Celtic have a match in hand, which could complicate things. Regardless, no other team has been as close to lifting the SPFL title over Celtic and Rangers as Hearts this season, which could be a fairytale in the making.

Most Goals Scored by Norway in FIFA World Cup Qualification

For most of its footballing history, the Norway national team was not considered to be a superteam. In fact, the team’s recent record shows failure to qualify for consecutive FIFA World Cups.

The last time Norway qualified for the World Cup was in 1998, while the goalscoring record was set during the qualifying campaign for the 1994 edition, when the Norway team scored 25 goals.

However, the qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been nothing short of remarkable.

With two games to spare, Norway has already scored 29 goals, breaking the 1994 record. The current campaign also included a thumping 11-1 win over Moldova, with Erling Haaland scoring 5 goals.

With a match against Estonia coming up, the record is likely to break the 30-goal mark as well.

Two Teams From the Same City Relegated from the EFL Championship

Over the course of EFL Championship history, two teams from the same city/town have never been relegated to League One in the same season. With Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday both in the relegation zone, this could easily change by the end of the 2025-26 season.

Sheffield Wednesday went into administration this season and were docked 12 points, leaving them with a points tally of -4, which almost guarantees League One football next season.

On the other hand, Sheffield United have 10 points and are 3 points away from safety, which, judging by their offensive record of only 11 goals in 15 matches, could spell disaster for the club.

Therefore, the likelihood of both Sheffield sides being relegated this season is as high as it has ever been.
