Scunthorpe's assistant manager was expected to wind down his lengthy career in 2000-01 but ended up playing a huge role in the club's promotion challenge. Injuries led to him being given a chance at right back in the second match of the season and he kept his place on merit, switching to his usual central defensive position where his experience and organisation helped a young team. He missed a short spell after suffering a knee injury at the end of February, but returned for the run-in and was a strong contender for the Iron's 'Player of the Season' award.
