The early term meeting of two of last season's relegated teams was settled when Iron captain Steve Torpey scored for the third time in four games. Lee Hodges' cross-cum-shot from the right was punched high into the air by keeper Tony Caig, and Torpey used his height and weight to bundle the ball over the line. United's record signing troubled the visitors all afternoon, and he almost added a second in the second-half when his close range header thudded against the far post. Injury weakened Pool's goal often led a charmed life and, although at fault for the vital goal, they had to thank Caig for saving them from a heavier defeat.
