VenueSt James Park, Exeter

On the brink of his takeover of the Welsh club, prospective new owner Sam Hammam saw Cardiff City clinch an opening day win in Devon. Back down in the Third Division after a single season sojourn in the Second, the Bluebirds territorial advantage was only just converted into three points. New look Exeter stuck gamely to their task but the visitors created enough opportunities to secure a more emphatic success. It was winger Josh Low who earned the Man of the Match plaudits, and he fired into an empty net from close range to record the winner.

Comments:

With Bobby Gould waiting in the wings to take charge, manager Billy Ayre selected his summer recruits - Mark Walton, David Greene, Paul Brayson and Andy Thompson.
