With tempers running high in the Gloucestershire sunshine, Torquay boss Wes Saunders was the angriest man as he saw his charges well beaten by a team that was down to ten men after the break. Birmingham referee Andy Hall was taking charge of only his third League game and he took his card tally to 13 yellows and 4 reds since taking the Nationwide whistle. The game rose to boiling point in the 19th minute when United lost keeper Stuart Jones with a leg injury following a challenge by Michael Duff. Replacement goalie Ryan Northmore was beaten by the aptly named Jamie Victory's left foot volley just before the break. There was still time for Julian Alsop to be dismissed for his second bookable offence and unused sub Bob Bloomer was sent from the bench after continuing the arguemnt with the officials. As the cards continued to flow in the second half, United's Steve Tully also discovered that two yellows equals red. Shortly before the numerical balance was restored, Town doubled their advantage when Neil Howarth met Hugh McAuley's corner with a powerful header.
