Howarth began 2000-01 as first choice at right back for Cheltenham Town and scored a late equaliser in the opening day draw with Mansfield Town but was then affected by hamstring problems. He subsequently found it difficult to regain his place and was restricted to sporadic appearances on the right or in the centre of defence. When fully fit, he is a good all-round defender who is comfortable on the ball, useful in the air and possesses good positional play.
