Clare's emergence was undoubtedly one of the high spots of a difficult season for Stockport County in 2000-01.
Initially introduced at full back, he was subsequently switched to sweeper to shore up a defence that was leaking too many goals.
A classy defender with great composure and an excellent ability to read the game in one so young, his influence on the team was such that the Hatters lost just four times in his 19 starts.
With several bigger clubs apparently monitoring his progress, he signed a new long-term contract for County towards the end of the 2000-01 season.
Clare joined Blackpool in August 2004 with a one-year contract.
His contract at Stockport County was extended to June 2008 in May 2007.
