McCafferty signed for Charlton Athletic from Irish side Foyle Harps after the London club had pursued him for a year. He has been a member of the Republic of Ireland Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 squads.
McCafferty's contract at Charlton Athletic was extended to June 2005 in June 2004. He then joined Rushden & Diamonds with a two-year contract but this was cancelled in April 2006.
