Ford joined Torquay United in the 2000 close season after a spell in Belgium and inherited the captaincy from the injured Brian Healy. He coolly dispatched four penalties during his stay including one in the local 'derby' with Exeter. In the midst of a fierce relegation scrap, it was surprising to say the least when the Gulls agreed to let their skipper move to rivals Darlington. He immediately became an integral part of the Quakers' team, his vision and experience in the centre of the park being major factors in the club's improved performances towards the end of the campaign. A combative central midfield player he passes the ball accurately and is also capable of moving forward to score spectacular goals from the edge of the box.
