Due to his father's birthplace, Emilio Nsué has played at full international level for Equatorial Guinea.
He joined Middlesbrough in August 2014 with a three-year contract.
Emilio joined Birmingham City in January 2017 with a contract to June 2020.
On 3 June 2024, FIFA ruled that Emilio was never eligible to play for Equatorial Guinea throughout his 11-year international career as he had made appearances for Spain’s youth sides in an official competition. He was banned from international football for six months and the Equatoguinean federation (Feguifut) fined £131,000.
