Whyte joined Celtic as a youngster and after making his senior debut as a 17-year old he went on to make over 200 appearances for the Parkhead club, for whom he was a member of the 1987-88 double-winning side. In August 1992 he moved south of the border to Middlesbrough where he continued to enhance his reputation in a seven-year stay. He eventually returned north, signing for Aberdeen in December 1999 and is now the Dons' club captain. A polished central defender who is strong in the tackle and reads the game well, he is now in the veteran stages of his career. Whyte won 12 full caps for Scotland between 1988 and 1999.
