Holden spent most of the 2000-01 campaign recovering from a broken leg sustained the previous March and it was not until the final game of the season that he returned to first-team action for Bolton Wanderers.
It was something of a fairytale comeback for, playing against Sheffield United, the team against whom he had suffered his injury, he netted a last-minute goal to earn the Wanderers a point in a 1-1 draw.
Holden joined Shrewsbury Town in June 2009 with a two-year contract.
He joined Chesterfield in February 2011 with a contract to June 2011 that was extended to June 2012 in May 2011.
After a loan spell, Holden joined Rochdale in January 2012 with a contract to June 2012.
He joined Walsall in July 2012 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2014 in June 2013.
