The Black Cats had now conceded 45 goals in the Premier League in this season; more than any other team. However, they had conceded only 12 goals at home; one less than leaders Leicester City. Patrick van Aanholt scored in the first minute of added time in the first half.

The Cherries had now lost one of their last six Premier League away games (won two). This was Simon Francis' 200th appearance for the club (all competitions).
