Comments:

League position: 14th Southampton had now dropped 23 points from winning positions so far in this Premier League season; more than any other team. In Leicester City's 9-0 win in their last visit to St Mary's Stadium in the Premier League in October 2019, the Saints had a player sent-off after 12 minutes (Ryan Bertrand). Also, Alexandre Jankewitz was shown a red card after two minutes of their 9-0 defeat at Manchester United in February 2021. They avoided conceding more than one goal in six consecutive games in the top division in the same season for the first time since February 1989 in League Division One. Jannik Vestergaard was sent-off after ten minutes for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. However, the subsequent claim for wrongful dismissal was upheld and the red card withdrawn.

Comments:

League position: 3rd Leicester City had now drawn two of their last 13 games in all competitions (won seven). With four games still to play, the Foxes had now exceeded their points total of 62 in the previous season in the Premier League. Jannik Vestergaard became the first opposition player sent-off in a Foxes game in the Premier League since Eddie Nketiah of Arsenal on 7 July 2020; longer than any other team in the division and the last team not to have opponent sent-off in 2020-21. They had now conceded one goal in each of seven of their last ten away games in the Premier League (none in two of the other three).
