Comments:

With this win, Portugal progressed to the knockout stages of the World Cup finals for the first time since 1966. The 1966 tournament in England was also the last time Portugal were awarded a penalty in the World Cup finals. Eusebio scored from the spot in the 3rd / 4th Play-Off against USSR at Wembley. With his penalty, Cristiano Ronaldo became Portugal's youngest-ever goalscorer at a World Cup finals at the age of 21 years and 132 days. The previous record was also set in 1996 when, at 22 years and 217 days, Antonio Simoes scored in a 3-1 defeat of Brazil at Everton's Goodison Park.

Comments:

As this defeat meant Iran could not progess to the knockout stages, they had now failed to survive the group stage in all three of their World Cup finals appearances.
