Middlesbrough had now lost 14 of their 17 FA Cup quarter-finals. They had now failed to score in five of their last six games. Boro had now failed to score in 14 games so far in this season, with seven of those coming in 2017. Adama Traore was booked in the third minute of added time in the first-half.

Manchester City, who had now reached the FA Cup semi-finals for the third time in the last six seasons, had gone on to reach the final on the last eight occasions they had progressed beyond the quarter-finals. This was the first time that City had won an away tie in the FA Cup quarter-finals since 12 March 1955 at Birmingham. Pep Guardiola had now reached a semi-final in all eight of his seasons in club management. Kelechi Iheanacho replaced Sergio Aguero in the first minute of added time in the second-half.
