VenueWembley Stadium
Attendance20,000
Kick-off: 5.15pm This was the 140th FA Cup Final with Chelsea and Leicester City becoming the 117th different pairing. The attendance was limited due to COVID-19 restrictions. The report on the Football Association's website stated an attendance of 20,000. This game was selected by the UK government as part of a pilot scheme to allow spectators to return to sporting events as the coronavirus restrictions began to be eased. Excluding the previous season that was played behind closed doors, this would be the lowest attendance since the 1890 Final between Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday at the Kennington Oval in London (also 20,000). Leicester City won a FA Cup Final at their fifth attempt, and in their first appearance since 1969. They had lost all four previous Finals; the most without a team winning the trophy. The Foxes became 44th winners of the FA Cup and the first first-time winners since Wigan Athletic in 2013. This was the first major cup competition that the 2015-16 Premier League champions had won since lifting the League Cup for the third time in 2000. Chelsea had won all of their seven previous ties against Leicester City in the FA Cup (two went to a replay). Chelsea became the first team to lose in consecutive FA Cup Finals since Newcastle United in 1999. This was Chelsea's 15th FA Cup Final appearance; only Arsenal (21) and Manchester United (20) had now reached more. The Blues had now reached the FA Cup Final in four of the last five seasons. Michael Oliver became the second referee to take charge of two FA Cup Finals since 1901 after Anthony Taylor in 2020.

Brendan Rodgers became the first Irish manager to win the FA Cup since Arsenal's Terry Neill against Manchester United in 1979. Kasper Schmeichel became the first goalkeeper to captain a FA Cup Final winning team since Arsenal's David Seaman against Southampton in 2003. Aged 37 years and 114 days, Wes Morgan became the oldest outfield player to appear in a FA Cup Final since Teddy Sheringham for West Ham United against Liverpool in 2006 (40 years and 41 days). Jamie Vardy became the first-ever player to appear in 13 different rounds of the FA Cup during his career (Preliminary round to the Final). He did not play in the Extra Preliminary round.

Comments:

Thomas Tuchel became the first German manager to take charge of a team in a FA Cup Final. Olivier Giroud appeared in his sixth FA Cup Final. Only Ashley Cole (eight), Ryan Giggs (seven) and Roy Keane (seven) had now played in more. Chelsea scored after 89 minutes (an own goal by Wes Morgan) but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review due to an offside decision.
