Trouble flared up between the Juventus and Liverpool fans before the kick-off in which 39 fans were crushed to death when a wall collapsed and 600 were injured. This awful tragedy led to English clubs being handed an indefinite ban from European competitions by UEFA which was lifted in 1990-91 with Liverpool's being extended for a further year. English clubs dominance of the European Cup since 1977 was finally ended. However, following the lifting of the ban and with the phenomenal impact of the Premier League, English clubs recovered to become a dominant force in Europe again.
