Kenny Dalglish

Scottish international (102 caps) Football Writers Association Footballer of the Year 1979, 1983, PFA Footballer of the Year 1983. Kenny Dalglish appeared to have achieved it all in a decade at Celtic, gaining four Scottish League championships, four Scottish Cup winners' medals and a Scottish League Cup winners' medal, and netting over 150 goals at a rate of one every two games. Signed for Liverpool by Bob Paisley for £440,000, a then-record fee between two British clubs, he was seen by many as a replacement for the departed Kevin Keegan but in fact the two were very different types of player. A quicksilver striker who could seemingly wriggle his way through any defence, Kenny was brave enough to throw himself in where it hurts in the cause of scoring goals and maintained his phenomenal scoring record in his time south of the border. His talents put him amongst the greatest of post-war players and his goal-scoring remains legendary – perhaps one of his most important goals was that which broke the deadlock in the 1978 European Cup Final against Bruges. A record tally of 102 Scottish caps confirmed his status as one of the all-time greats and when he won the league and cup double in his first season as player-manager for the Reds it seemed as if there was nothing he couldn't do. Further success followed, but not on such a scale before he departed rather abruptly at the beginning of 1991. Further high profile positions as manager followed at Blackburn and Newcastle before he dropped back to the sidelines again.
