Following their deaths in a road traffic accident in Spain on 3 July 2025, a minute’s silence was observed prior to kick-off as a mark of respect to Liverpool's Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. . The last three FA Community Shield editions, and five of the last seven, had now been decided by a penalty shootout. . This was the second that Crystal Palace had met Liverpool at a neutral venue; Palace won 4-3 at Villa Park in a FA Cup semi-final in 1990.

Since its inception in 1908, this was Crystal Palace's first ever appearance in the FA Charity Shield / FA Community Shield. . Palace had now become the first FA Charity / FA Community Shield debutant to win the traditional season-opener since Derby County in 1975. . A forerunner of the FA Charity Shield was the Sheriff of London Charity Shield which was staged for the first time on 19 March 1898 at The Crystal Palace in Sydenham. The honour was shared after Corinthian and Sheffield United also drew in a replay at the same venue two weeks later.
