: 1931 Chelsea signed Windsor and Eton goalkeeper Vic Woodley as a professional. He made his debut the same season and played in all 42 League matches the following season. In the summer of 1933 Chelsea signed Scotland's goalkeeper Johnny Jackson but after six games he was seriously injured at Huddersfield and Woodley again took over and, though he vied with the Scot when he was fit again, he was never completely ousted. Became England's 'keeper in 1937 and played in the last 19 internationals before the Second War. In March 1946, when he was thinking of retirement, he joined Derby County who had goalkeeping difficulties at the time and won a FA Cup winners medal with them two months later. Left the game at the end of the first post-war season having played in 282 League matches.; 1955 Frank Swift, former Manchester City and England goalkeeper, played in his last first class match.; 1961 By beating Leicester City 2-0 in the FA Cup Final at Wembley Tottenham Hotspur became the first 20th Century side to do the League and Cup "double". Aston Villa had last achieved this feat in 1897. In the same match centre-forward Bobby Smith equalled Charlie Athersmith's feat of winning the "double" and playing for England against Scotland, Ireland and Wales in the same season. Smith also played against continental opposition but such matches did not exist when Athersmith was playing for Aston Villa in 1896-97.; 1966 There were only 4,554 spectators at the First Division match at Highbury between Arsenal and Leeds United. This was the lowest Football League attendance at the ground since it was opened in 1913. Leeds won the match 3-0. It should be noted that Liverpool were playing in the European Cup Winners Cup Final that night and the match was on television.; 1989 Derek Fazackerley (37 years and 182 days) became the oldest player to play for Bury.
