The ten teams played in a league to determine the top 4 to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, with Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Colombia qualifying. Peru, the fifth placed team, advanced to the inter-confederation play-offs against New Zealand.
FIFA awarded Peru and Chile 3–0 wins as a result of Bolivia fielding Nelson Cabrera who was ineligible. Originally Bolivia had defeated Peru 2–0 and drawn 0–0 with Chile. Nelson Cabrera had previously represented Paraguay and did not meet eligibility rules.
