FA Cup, 2024

FA Cup 2023-24 season review

The Final of the 143rd edition of the world's oldest cup competition was held at Wembley Stadium on 25 May 2024.

This was the ninth year of the title sponsorship deal with Emirates, the Dubai-based airline.

The extra preliminary round commenced on 4 August 2023.

732 clubs entered: the same total as the 2022-23 season. This included a total of 640 clubs in the qualifying rounds.

Replays were removed from the 5th round onwards with ties going to extra time and penalties, if required.

The 5th round ties were all played in midweek.

The competition prize fund totalled £5,508,000. It ranged from losers in the Extra preliminary round receiving £375 while the winners received £3.45million.

Attendances in the proper rounds totalled 2,167,257; an average of 14,644.

For the second time in the competition's history, the Final was contested by the same two clubs in consecutive seasons; previously Blackburn Rovers vs Queen's Park in 1883-84 and 1884-85 (Rovers won both games that were played at the Kennington Oval in London).

In the second major final to be contested by the two Manchester clubs, Manchester United won their 13 FA Cup Final. Only Arsenal had now won more (14). United also became the first club to reach 22 FA Cup Finals.

Manchester City failed in their attempt to become the first-ever team to complete a league and FA Cup double in consecutive seasons.

The domestic broadcasting rights were awarded to the BBC, ITV and S4C. BBC and ITV both broadcast the Final live.

As only Premier League stadiums contained the required permanent camera angles, VAR was only made available at selected ties, in addition to the Semi-finals and Final at Wembley.

Previous IFAB approved amendments to regulations allowed nine players to be selected on the substitutes bench with up to five allowed to be used. If required, a sixth could be used in extra time while further substitutions could be made under the concussion protocols.

The traditional alternative-style format was used for penalty shoot-outs.
