On this day in football history

1921 Alfred Quantril Derby County and England winger married the daughter of former Derby and England's Steve Bloomer.
1931 Dai Astley, Charlton Athletic's Welsh international forward, transferred to Aston Villa. He could play either as a centre or an inside-forward and was one of the best in the League during the 1930's. Began with Merthyr Town in 1927 in the Third Division South and moved to Charlton a year later. Spent five and a half seasons at Villa Park and it was there that he gained his reputation. Signed for Derby County towards the end of 1936 and Blackpool in early 1939. The War brought his career to an end and his final record was 170 goals in 377 League matches and 12 internationals between 1931 and 1939.
1954 Scotland played in her first ever World Cup Final match and were beaten 1-0 by Austria in a Group Qualifying match in Zurich.
1972 Glasgow Rangers were banned from Europe for two years after crowd trouble in the previos season's European Final. The ban was later reduced to one year on appeal.
1983 Tottenham Hotspur became the first team to go "Public" with their Stock Exchange Floatation.
