Frings spent his early career at Rot Wiess Alsdorf, Rhenania Alsdorf and Alemannia Aachen before stepping up to the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen in 1996.
Frings made his international debut as a substitute in February 2001 against France but played no part in qualification for the 2002 World Cup finals.
However, he played in all of Germany's games in Japan and South Korea, including the final against Brazil in Yokohama.
Frings scored the fourth goal in Germany's 4-2 win against Costa Rica in the first game of the 2006 World Cup finals played in Germany. It made the game the highest-scoring opening match in the history of the competition.
