Palmer joined Ipswich Town from Cambridge University before joining Watford. He continued to serve Watford well in 2000-01 although his run of 102 consecutive first team appearances dating back to October 1998 finally came to an end at the turn of the year when he was relegated to the subs' bench for the game against Bolton Wanderers.

He was also sidelined for a while by a hamstring problem but otherwise he proved to be a model of consistency for the Hornets.

A versatile player who can play either as a central defender or just in front of the back four, he netted two goals during the campaign.

Palmer agreed a new one-year contract with Queens Park Rangers in June 2003 before joining Milton Keynes Dons as their player / coach in July 2004.
