A hard-working midfield playmaker, Stefano is strong in the tackle and yet also a creative force in the centre of the park. His early career was spent flitting between Serie A and B with clubs such as Cosenza, Parma (where he won a UEFA Cup winners' medal in 1995) and Padova. He returned to Parma for the 1997-98 season and quickly shot to prominence, earning a second UEFA Cup win in 1999. He left Parma as part of thr transfer deal that saw Marcio Amoruso move from Udinese to Parma for £22 million. He quicley established himself at Udinese as a talented playmaker and gained his first cap against Sweden in February 2000. He featured prominently in the campaign to qualify for the 2002 World Cup finals and has now appeared 21 times for the Azurri. At club level he spent two seasons with Udinese before joining Lazio in the summer of 2001. His International place is under threat from Cristiano Doni but he should make the squad for Japan.
