Shay Given

Shay Given's patience in the early years of his career have been rewarded many times over as he has become Newcastle United, and Ireland's, long-term first choice keeper.

Exceptionally consistent, Shay's calm authority gives added confidence to his defensive colleague.

He became United's all-time most capped player.

Shay travelled to the 2002 World Cup at the end of an outstanding season with Newcastle United when many leading observers suggested that he was the Premier League's top keeper.

He has reaped the rewards of the patience and determination he displayed earlier in his career.

After failing to make the grade at Celtic, he then struggled to make any impression at Blackburn Rovers.

It was a loan spell at Sunderland that was the catalyst to his success as he helped the Wearsiders to Premier League promotion in 1996.

That also brought him to the international stage when he made his Republic debut against Russia in March 1996.

The £1.5million move to Newcastle United a year later further aided his prospects and became Ireland's first choice.

He was especially impressive in the two World Cup Play-Off games against Iran although his performance in the home qualifier against Holland probably ranks as one of his finest games.

Despite not being the tallest of keepers, Shay dominated his area and was an exceptional shot-stopper.

Shay's contract at Newcastle United was extended to June 2011 in May 2006.

He joined Manchester City in February 2009 with a contract to June 2013.

Shay joined Aston Villa in July 2011 with a five-year contract.

He joined Stoke City in July 2015 with a two-year contract.
