Gullit's honours included Netherlands' Player of the Year (1984 and 1986), European Footballer of the Year ('Ballon d'Or') (1987), European Championships winner (1988) and World Soccer's Player of the Year (1987 and 1989). With AC Milan, he was winner of the Serie A (1988, 1992 and 1993), Super Coppa Italia (1988, 1992 and 1993), European Champions Cup (1989 and 1990), European Super Cup (1989 and 1990) and Intercontinental Cup (1989 and 1990). With Sampdoria, he won the Coppa Italia (1994). Gullit joined Chelsea in July 1995 from AC Milan, quickly becoming a crowd favourite and was appointed player/manager in 1996. In a controversial and underrated reign as manager Chelsea won the FA Cup but his authority was not accepted by some of the players and he was dismissed and replaced by Vialli.
