Cyprus goalkeeper Andreas Charitou was hit by a firework during the first-half and had to be replaced. The Cyprus players then left the field and refused to play. Following discussions between referee Roger Philippi, UEFA observer Alfred Delcourt and team officials, the Cyprus players agreed to finish the game, but under protest. The result was subsequently annulled by UEFA and the game ordered to be replayed behind closed doors. It was played on 9 December 1987. However, the Dutch FA (KNVB) still awarded caps and goals for this game.
