Ferdinand became Britain's most expensive defender when he moved from West Ham United to Leeds United in November 2000 for £18million.
Allied to a perfect physique for the modern central defender, his elegance and calmness under pressure has earned him the tag of England's first true ball-playing defender since the 1966 World Cup winning captain, Bobby Moore.
A first-choice under Sven-Goran Eriksson, the England coach also appreciated his pace and his power in the air.
Ferdinand made his international debut against Cameroon in 1997 - just eight days after his 19th birthday.
Although an unused sub in the 1998 World Cup, Ferdinand was omitted from the Euro 2000 squad.
With FIFA's confirmation, Ferdinand scored his first international goal with the opener in England's 3-0 defeat of Denmark in Niigata to put them into the quarter finals of the 2002 World Cup.
After the 2002 finals, Ferdinand smashed the transfer record again with a £29.1million move to Manchester United.
His contract at Old Trafford was extended to June 2009 in August 2005, then to June 2013 in April 2008 and to June 2014 in May 2013.
He joined Queens Park Rangers in July 2014 with a one-year contract.
