Barnes started the 2000-01 season as deputy to Tony Caig in the Blackpool goal but eventually made the position his own after seeing off a challenge from on-loan 'keeper John Kennedy.
A good shot stopper with a safe pair of hands, he grew in confidence and contributed a number of clean sheets to the Bloomfield Road club's promotion campaign.
At his own request, Barnes went on the transfer list at Blackpool in November 2003.
He joined Sheffield United in July 2004 on a one-year contract.
Barnes joined Grimsby Town in June 2006 in a three-year deal that was cancelled in March 2009.
