On the fringes of the first team at Arsenal for three seasons, Paul went on to enjoy an extended career below the Premiership level.

Having joined First Division new boys Gillingham for a substantial fee in the 2000 summer, Paul had the misfortune to suffer an ankle injury on the opening day of the 2000-01 season against Stockport County.

He returned to the line-up at the end of September and was rarely absent thereafter.

An experienced striker, he was at his best playing just behind the front two where his subtle touches and alertness made him a dangerous player.

Paul joined Sheffield United in January 2004 with a contract to June 2006 but was made available for transfer in June 2005.

Paul joined Rotherham United in January 2006 with a contract to the end of the season.

He then joined Chesterfield in July 2006 with a two-year contract that was cancelled in August 2007.
