A former England Under-21 and B international, Paul had a wretched time with injuries at Queens Park Rangers in 2000-01.
He missed the start of the campaign after breaking a bone in his ankle in a pre-season match and when he returned to the first team at the end of October, he then suffered a recurrence of the same injury.
He recovered to make a brief run in the side in the New Year but injured his ankle a third time and, following surgery, he was sidelined until the summer.
Paul, who is a left-footed midfield player who can also turn out as a wing back, he moved on to Oldham Athletic in December 2001 to team up with his former Carlisle boss Mick Wadsworth and QPR coach Iain Dowie.
He followed the former to Portugal's Beira Mar in 2004.
Paul returned to Carlisle United in February 2006 with a contract to the end of the season.
He joined Shrewsbury Town in June 2008 with a two-year contract.
Paul's contract at Hartlepool United was extended to June 2011 in August 2010.
He re-joined Oldham Athletic in January 2013 with a contract to June 2013.
