After recovering from a serious back injury that at one point seemed to threaten to end his career, Paul reclaimed his place as Southampton's number one goalkeeper at the start of the 2000-01 campaign.
Apart from a brief spell early in the season when his form dipped, he went from strength to strength, establishing a new post-war club record early in the New Year with a run of seven straight Premiership clean sheets and 667 minutes without conceding a goal.
His agility and shot stopping capabilities will stand him in good stead for a few more seasons to come.
Paul signed an extension to his contract that bound him to the Saints until 2005.
However, having fulfilled a boyhood dream with his loan move to Liverpool (where he made two appearances due to injuries to Dudek and Chris Kirkland), he returned to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2004 with a contract to June 2006 that was cancelled in January 2006.
Paul joined Queens Park Rangers in February 2006 with a contract to the end of the season that was subsequently extended to June 2007.
He was made available for transfer by QPR in February 2007.
