After struggling to make the breakthrough at Arsenal, the services of the gritty striker became much sought after.

Unable to command a regular place in the Arsenal first team, Paul was loaned out to Luton Town and Brighton & Hove Albion before Alan Ball paid £1million for his services in August 1996 to take him to Manchester City.

Never a prolific goalscorer or indeed a permanent fixture in a struggling City side, he will always be remembered for his 94th minute equaliser in the 1999 Wembley Play Off Final against Gillingham and again almost 12 months later sealing City's promotion back to the Premiership on the final day of the season with the fourth goal at Blackburn Rovers.

After a good run of form, Paul gained his first full international cap coming on as a second half substitute for Scotland in the 2002 World Cup qualification campaign in October 2000.

Paul signed a new two-year contract with Leicester City in May 2003 but moved on to Blackburn Rovers in June 2004 in another two-year deal.

Paul returned to Manchester City in July 2006 with a two-year contract before being made available for transfer in August 2007.

Paul joined Leicester City in August 2008 with a two-year contract that was cancelled in February 2010.

He joined Leeds United in March 2010 with a contract to June 2010.
