Mellor - the son of former Sheffield Wednesday winger Ian Mellor - scored his first goal for Liverpool in a Worthington Cup Semi-Final at Sheffield United.
He joined West Ham United in August 2003 on a season's loan but his progress was hit by tendonitis and the need for knee surgery.
Mellor joined Preston North End in August 2006 with a three-year contract that was extended to June 2012 in October 2008.
He was made available for transfer in May 2010 before announcing his retirment due to a knee injury in May 2012.
