McGowan featured regularly for Oxford United at the start of the 2000-01 campaign but then fell out of favour following a change in management and eventually returned to Scotland in March where he played a handful of games for Second Division club Stranraer. He is a pacy tough-tackling defender who has mostly featured at left back for the U's.
