Matias Almeyda

Date of birth21 December 1973
Place of birthAzul
NationalityArgentine
Weight72 kg
Height1.74 m
PositionMidfielder

A veritable hard-working midfielder, Matias allies his industry with excellent creative techniques. Inevitably he was the latest to earn the unenviable tag of the new Maradona when he, in winning the Libertadores Cup in 1996 with River Plate, earned a move to Europe with Sevilla. After a year in Spain, he moved to Italy when he was signed for Lazio by England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson. He was subsequently valued at £15million in the switch that saw him move to Parma in 2000 as Argentine colleague Hernan Crespo went in the opposite direction. With his tremendous stamina, Matias could line-up as Juan Sebastian Veron's central midfield partner in the Far East, in preference to the recently injured Diego Simeone.
