Burns had few first-team opportunities at Port Vale in 2000-01 and it is for an appearance in an unaccustomed role that his season will be remembered. When 'keeper Mark Goodlad was carried off just 30 minutes into the home game with Wigan in March Burns came off the bench, took over in goal and produced a very capable performance to earn Vale a point in a 0-0 draw. He is a dependable central defender who always tries his best whatever the circumstances.
Burns joined Bristol Rovers in August 2004 on non-contract terms before moving on to Shrewsbury Town then Kidderminster Harriers in December 2004 on the same basis.
