Full name is: Iván Helguera Bujía
Helguera is a hard-tackling defensive midfield player with excellent distribution, his skills also allowing him to appear as a sweeper if required. His early club career was spent in the Spanish lower divisions with Revilla, Manchego and Albacete prior to a brief and not particularly successful spell in Italy with Roma in 1997-1998. He returned home to play for Espanyol and then joined present club Real Madrid in the summer of 1999, going on to win a European Champions' Cup winners' medal in his first season with the club. He won his first cap for Spain against Italy in November 1998 and is now a regular in the squad, having appeared in the Euro 2000 tournament and in over half his country's games in the qualifying rounds for the 2002 World Cup finals. He will be a definite starter in the central midfield for Spain.
