Abbey was affected by a string of minor injuries: knee, shoulder, groin strain, hamstring and also a bout of 'flu, nevertheless his overall performance at right back for Macclesfield Town showed steady improvement in 2000-01.
He is now much more of a team player, although he still retains his natural individual flair and enthusiasm.
Abbey went on the Moss Rose transfer list in March 2002.
He joined Port Vale in December 2004 on non-contract terms then secured a contract to the end of the season.
Abbey joined Crewe Alexandra in July 2007 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2009 in May 2008.
