Manu's first season at Highbury (1997-98) saw Arsenal win the double. It earned his recall to the France squad and the dream year was complete when he scored in the World Cup Final win against Brazil.
Manu began at ES Argues before joining AC Monaco in 1988. He spent a long part of his career at Monaco starting as a defender before being developed into a central midfielder by Arsene Wenger.
He was voted Young Player of the Year in 1990 and made his international debut in August 1990 against Poland. He was a scapegoat at international level, when playing at left back he was in the side that lost to Bulgaria and failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup Finals.
He moved to Arsenal in 1997 and forced his way back into the French team. He starred in the 1998 World Cup Finals scoring the winning goal against Brazil and won the double with Arsenal before moving to Barcelona in July 2000. He failed to break into the first team and after one unsuccessful season returned to the Premiership with Chelsea. Has never been the same player since leaving Arsenal.
