Chelsea won the race for Eidur Gudjohnsen's signature - the negotiations being helped along by his father who had played against then-boss Luca Vialli in the 1990 European Cup Winners Cup Final.
Initially, he made sporadic substitute appearances within Vialli's rotation system but after the Italian's departure and the subsequent sale of Tore Andre Flo, he came into his own.
He marked his first Chelsea start with his first goal for the club against Liverpool and hit a purple patch in December with a brace against Derby County, a fierce drive against Bradford City and a classic Boxing Day double at Ipswich Town.
He went on to become Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's regular strike partner for the second half of the season and their productive combination was crucial to Chelsea's much-improved form that resulted in a UEFA Cup spot.
An alert, intelligent frontrunner with excellent ball control and dribbling skills, Eidur had a superb first season in the Premiership and became a firm crowd favourite in the process.
Eidur's contract at Chelsea was extended to June 2008 in July 2004.
Eidur joined Barcelona in June 2006 with a four-year contract.
He joined Stoke City in August 2010 with a one-year contract.
Eidur re-joined Bolton Wanderers in December 2014 with a contract to June 2015.
