Richards proved his worth for Southampton in 2000-01 with a series of commanding performances that must have brought him close to international recognition.
Without doubt his central defensive partnership with Claus Lundekvam was the cornerstone on which the Saints' best league performance for 18 years was built, and they were particularly effective in the early part of 2001 when just one Premiership goal was conceded in the first three months of the year.
Richards announced his retirement in March 2005 due to a serious medical condition.
Sadly, he passed away in February 2011, aged 36.
