Unable to get a regular game at Crewe Alexandra at the beginning of 2000-01, Colin joined Notts County on loan in September and featured in a handful of games for the Magpies. On his return to Gresty Road, he enjoyed a brief run in the first team, netting a double in the 2-0 win over Wolves, but then fell out of favour again in the New Year and moved to Bury on loan in what proved an inspirational deal by Shakers' boss Andy Preece.
Colin forged a fine partnership with youngster Jon Newby and became a highly popular figure with the Gigg Lane faithful. He scored five times in fifteen outings for the Second Division club and impressed with his superb touch, vision and skill.
Colin is a strong-running striker with a preference for ground play rather than aerial combat.
Colin joined Bury in January 2003 on a monthly contract before moving on to Shrewsbury Town in July 2003 in a two-year deal. However, his contract was cancelled in September 2004, and he joined Grimsby Town on non-contract terms before agreeing a monthly deal.
