A world-class striker and son of a professional footballer Christian spent much of his youth in Australia. When his family moved back to Italy he signed up for Prato for the 1989-90 season. He moved to Torino in the post season where he spent two seasons before a move to Pisa and then Ravenna in 1993. Here he attracted the attention of Venezia and after one season he joined Serie A side Atalanta and then got a dream move to Juventus at the end of the 1995-1996 season. He replaced the injured Alen Boksic in the team and his performances earned him an international debut in March 1997 against Moldova. He was surprisingly sold to Atletico Madrid in Spain for £ 12.5 million and scored twenty-four goals in twenty-four games before returning to Italy to play for Lazio for £ 19 million in the summer of 1998. He was top scorer at the 1998 World Cup Finals and became the most expensive striker following his £ 31 million transfer to Inter Milan in July 1999. Injury has prevented him winning more caps, missing the 2000 European Championship Finals with a hamstring injury and only appeared once in qualification for the 2002 World Cup finals.
Christian made up for lost time in the finals with both goals in Italy's opening game win against Ecuador, then their consolation in the 2-1 defeat by Croatia. He added his fourth with Italy's goal in their shock 2-1 elimination by Korea.
