Rae featured regularly in the Sunderland first-team from the end of September 2000, scoring the winner at Charlton Athletic in November.

However, he was sidelined by a bout of tendonitis that caused him to miss the last few months of the season and eventually required corrective surgery.

A combative midfield player who is always willing to get stuck in, he also shows undoubted ability on the ball.

Rae joined Rangers in July 2004 on a two-year contract.
