As season 2005-06 dawned, the end of an era was in sight as Alan announced it would be the last of the Geordie living legend's playing career
Newcastle's most capped England player, the summer of 1996 witnessed his emotional move to St James' Park when Kevin Keegan made him the most expensive player in world football at £15million.
Although there's been the frustration at the lack of silverware, Alan has been made an Honorary Freeman of Newcastle and was further honoured in June 2001 when he received an OBE.
Other recognition includes PFA Footballer of the Year in 1995 and 1997, Football Writers' Player of the Year in 1995 and Premiership Golden Boot winner in 1995, 1996 and 1997.
Alan was also named the Premiership's Player of the Decade in 2002.
Already on the club's coaching staff, the United captain's Toon tally ended at 206 goals in 404 appearances so eclipsing Jackie Milburn's record and becoming United's all-time leading goalscorer.
